Right now I am focused on making small pencil drawings. This is partly because I enjoy the scale and the speed with which I can finish a drawing, and also because with young children afoot, my time, energy, and space are limited. But I lean into these limitations as they help me focus just on what’s necessary for me to make an image.

A drawing begins with a quick gesture. Then I look and attempt to capture interesting form and light through experimentation with composition, texture, and value. What I often see upon completion are landscapes or natural events unencumbered by any realistic sense of dimension. Absent color and location specific detail, what remains are psychological landscapes or abstract images.

This process is intuitive. I do not have a predetermined image in mind when working, and I rarely use reference imagery. While recently I have started researching astrophotography for inspiration, I don’t attempt to mimic anything; I only wish to have a trove of fresh images in my mind that might help me resolve a drawing. I’m most interested in natural optical illusions and natural events, such as retrograde motion or crashing meteorites. These subjects intrigue me not only because they often fool our senses, but also because they can act as a metaphor for potential disasters. While not explicitly in the imagery itself, I often think about climate change, the American political landscape, and the physics of the universe when making these drawings and thinking about the future to come.

The price range for these drawings is $150 - $300, plus shipping and tax
