My drawings begin with a quick gesture. Then I look and attempt to capture interesting form and light through experimentation with composition, texture, and value. I do not have a predetermined image in mind when working, and I rarely use reference imagery. What I often see upon completion are landscapes or natural events unencumbered by any realistic sense of dimension. Absent color and location-specific detail, what remains are psychological landscapes or abstract images. While not explicitly in the imagery itself, I often think about climate change, the American political landscape, and the physics of the universe when making these drawings and thinking about the future to come.
